Many of you will not believe what you’re just about to read. Continuing our first attempt to juice out on the netbook that started here, I can now present the final verdict!
Both installations completed successfully, meaning that right now, I have a tiny netbook that sports Windows 7 Ultimate, SQLServer 2008 with Advanced Services and Visual Studio 2008 plus Service Pack 1! I have to say that startup time is a drag, have to wait about 3 minutes through for a cold boot and about half a minute through for startup from Hibernation. Other than that, services start automatically at boot time without ever creating any problems, SQL Management Studio is a snap (no, really!) and the system remains 100% responsive even now that the following are all running at the same time:
1. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
2. DB: SQLServer 2008 Express with Advanced Services + SQL Management Studio
3. IDE: Visual Studio 2008
4. Blog: Windows Live Writer
5. MP: Zoom
I have to admit that I’m amazed myself. I didn’t expect this to operate so promptly. Even a 217 lines SQL Query took just about one second to complete! I have to say that’s not half bad for such a tiny machine. You need one more example? Okay, how about displaying an SQL table’s contents within Visual Studio? The IDE populates the grid in 22 seconds! Granted, it’s not lightning fast but on the other hand, who would ever imagine that it’s even remotely possible?
Only drawback? The poor fan NEVER stops working. It’s like the machine’s on fire and the air it’s getting is not even close to being enough. Well if you can stand the sound of an ever rotating fan, this is a real portable workbench! I can use it for my everyday internetworking needs, writing and developing! Even out in the local coffee shop.
Imagine I was heads on against netbooks when they first came out. Imagine that. Now I can’t even stress out how happy I am to own one. Oh well…
Nice Configuration! If you want a “real” desktop environment though, take a look at what men nowadays use: KDE4.4

You know I’m just joking with you, right? Use whatever you want, if it suits your needs. I personally have never ever worked so efficiently since I use KDE4.
And it runs like hell on a netbook…
Your friendly Linux-Advocate SuprKillr!
Well you know me, I’m all for Fedora (loved it and always will) but on the other hand, this post was targeted towards other issues.
For example, how much can the little thing actually take? And two, I’m a .NET developer for crying out loud and no, Mono does not come close
I’m bad
LOL! Thanx for the comment mate, 4.4 looks nice.
On the other hand, I’m just too lazy to find replacements for the 5 programs I use and which bound me to MS
(and yeah, don’t think they’re more than 5).
